What life dream or goal have you given up on?

Oooh! Good one.

I've given up on my dream of being a magazine editor.

Why? Well, I did achieve it briefly, when I was editor of a short-lived magazine called GRID. It was shut down when a new publisher decided to cut a lot of new projects.

However, about the same time, I realised that the whole world was changing, and the arrival of blogs and other early forms of social media were completely reshaping the media landscape. The energy I was putting into GRID got pushed into my personal blogging projects instead, thereby setting the scene for the last three years of my career…

Time overtook the dream, and I don't miss it.

Watching Karen Millen find its blogging feet

I love watching new blogs develop. I discovered a few months back that high street fashion chain Karen Millen has started blogging started blogging last year, and I've become an avid reader. Maybe it's because I spend my working life helping people get their start in social media, but watching a young blog find its voice and style over the first year or so of its life just fascinates me.

There's something really touching about the Karen Millen blog, because there's something very slightly amateur hour about it. It's hosted on wordpress.com without a mapped domain name, and there's a very clear sense of real people writing the post, without a descent into marketing speak. Even the photography is evidentally done by the posters rather than seasoned pros. Compare these two pictures, from a post about a Karen Millen dress won in a charity competition:

The picture on the left is the original from the blog post, the one on the right a tweaked version just done in Preview.app on my Mac (I did nothing more than auto-levels). But that's cool. That feels more authentic. I get the same feeling of relationship and honesty that I do when I watch my bloggers do things like this. Good work, Karen Millen team.

Frosty Spider Web

It's been one of those "feet not touching the ground" kind of weeks.

I started it up in Suffolk, at Mum's, doing some stuff for her prior to her week in Norwich for chemo. We woke to a frosty morning, with some stunning frosty cobwebs in the back garden. A morning running chores, and three hour drive to Sutton, lead into a small nightmare.

Now, if there are any Six Apart people reading this, you are now getting a Hard Stare from me. You see, we upgraded our internal Movable Type server to MT 4.01 with enterprise pack. And it broke. It took three days to resolve, and it turns out that a bug in the upgrade script code was to blame. Not fun. Not fun at all.

Tuesday was a combination of hard work on a presentation I delivered on Wednesday, and a retreat to Caffe Nero in Sutton for an experiment or two with Seesmic, a new video conversation site:

And its…interesting. It's an attempt to move video onwards from a pure publishing model, into the sort of conversational model you see in blogs. The key is making all the recording and encoding in-built into the web app, so that you just record and publish straight away. No uploading. No waiting. It could be very interesting.

And today, I pootled into central London to do a presentation to a bunch of people from recruitment agencies, to support our sales teams. It was not what you'd call a well-informed audience, at least on my subject. Less than 25% had ever read a blog, and less than 5% read them regularly. Sometimes I get frustrated with the slow pace of change at RBI, but today reminded me of just how far ahead we are sometimes…

So, life.

I must getting better at posting to my blogs. I must get better at posting to my blogs.

It's a function of being a "professional" blog advisor, I suppose. I spend too long talking about blogs, and too little time doing it these days. That's sorta counter-productive, though. Becoming all mouth and no blog trousers, as it were, isn't going to do me, or the people I'm working with, any good at all.

So, I must reform. I must end my ways. I must put finger to keyboard and blog with strength and confidence, as once I blogged in the past.

It's a new week. It's a new start. Here we go.
